Care & Maintenance
A Rovelli pipe is crafted to last a lifetime — and with the right care, it will only improve with age. Proper maintenance ensures a cooler, cleaner smoke and preserves the natural beauty of the briar.
Before First Use
Before smoking your pipe for the first time, inspect the bowl and airway to ensure it is clean and unobstructed. Your pipe is ready to use immediately — no special preparation is required.
During Smoking
- Avoid overheating the bowl. Smoke slowly and gently to preserve the briar.
- Do not tamp too firmly; a light touch keeps airflow consistent.
- If the pipe becomes too hot to hold comfortably, allow it to cool before continuing.
After Each Smoke
- Allow the pipe to cool completely before handling.
- Remove the stem gently (never while the pipe is hot).
- Empty the bowl and lightly tap out ash — avoid knocking it against hard surfaces.
- Run a pipe cleaner through the stem and shank to remove moisture.
Regular Cleaning
To maintain optimal performance:
- Use pipe cleaners after every smoke.
- Occasionally use a slightly alcohol-moistened cleaner for deeper cleaning (avoid excess liquid).
- Clean the stem separately to prevent residue buildup.
Resting Your Pipe
Briar is a natural material that absorbs moisture. For best results:
- Let your pipe rest at least 24 hours between smokes.
- Rotating between multiple pipes will extend their lifespan and improve smoking quality.
Bowl Care
Over time, a thin carbon layer (“cake”) will develop inside the bowl:
- Maintain a cake thickness of about 1 mm.
- If it becomes too thick, gently reduce it using a pipe reamer.
- Avoid smoking to the very bottom if it risks overheating the wood.
Stem Care
- Clean regularly to prevent discoloration and buildup.
- Polish occasionally with a soft cloth.
- Avoid exposure to extreme heat or direct sunlight.
Storage
- Store your pipe in a dry, ventilated space.
- Avoid airtight containers while the pipe is still moist.
- Keep away from extreme temperature changes.
A Final Note
Each Rovelli pipe is made from carefully selected briar, designed to age beautifully over time. With proper care, your pipe will develop character, deepen in color, and deliver a consistently refined smoking experience.
Treat it well — and it will reward you for years to come.
